Invasive Species Conference in the ‘Peg

You can always tell when something is important because someone, somewhere organizes a conference and invites experts from around the world to attend.

This time, Winnipeg will be the host of the 19th International Conference on Aquatic Invasive Species. See the preliminary program posted here.

Even with elevated awareness and vigilance throughout North America, Lake Winnipeg has severe algal blooms. So Winnipeg is an appropriate host to emphasize the importance of both responsible boating practices and land management care to control migration of undesirable aquatic species and to retain plant-food nutrients on land.

Alberta Environment and Parks, and Alberta’s neighboring provinces and US states have responded aggressively to inspect for invasive species on watercraft that are transported on Alberta roads.
